Resources for Graduate Student Support

NSERC: Canada Graduate Scholarships

From the NSERC website: “the program is to promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.” There are two tiers: the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) and the Post-graduate Scholarship (PGS), but are highly competitive and prestigious, though the CGS is awarded to the more highly ranked students. Please be aware that ranking of applications of these kinds are often prone to randomness and arbitrary assessments despite efforts to standardize evaluation. If you apply for an NSERC scholarship, you only apply once; the CGS/PGS distinction occurs in the review process.

Eligibility

• Canadian citizen

• You must not have completed more than a couple years of graduate school (there are various criteria)

• You can apply for the Master’s (CGS M) for the first year of graduate school, and then the CGS D for three more years of funding

If you are interested in research in the Kubarych group and you are eligible for the NSERC CGS, please contact Prof. Kubarych sooner rather than later to discuss research topics and application strategy.

Application deadline: early December 1
